At the Shelter

The LA Animal Shelter is an independent shelter which cares for and rehomes stray or neglected dogs and cats in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. It is based just outside Amherst and is run mainly by volunteers.

At the Shelter, we provide love and care, but we are not a replacement for the loving home that all companion animals deserve. If you are looking to adopt a cat or dog please try the LA Animal Shelter first.

PLEASE HELP SAVE HANK

Hank, is an American Staffordshire Terrier currently living at the shelter. He is only a year old and is a gentle, sweet dog. He has ruptured the ligaments in both his back legs. He needs surgery. We have found aHank veterinarian establishment that is willing to do the surgeries at a greatly reduced cost, because we are a shelter. We need to raise $2000 for Hank’s surgeries and medications. We have already received pledges of $700 ($500 from Access Labels).
If you can help Hank to get his surgeries, we would be very grateful. Any amount would be a contribution. We accept cash or cheques.
Donations can also be made at our CanadaHelps.org site.
We are a registered charity, so you will get a tax deductible receipt.

Please send contributions to:

We are more than half-way to our goal of $2000 to cover the surgeries and medication. If this keeps up, Hank will be heading into his first surgery soon. Thank you all for your support. I’m sure if Hank could speak, he would be as grateful and excited as we are.

Hank’s Fund Increases Enough to Go Ahead with Surgery

The wonderful response from our supporters made us feel confident enough to go ahead and schedule surgery for Hank. Having already received $1620 in donations, we have hopes that we will reach our goal of $2000. So, we took Hank to the vet hospital for an examination and Hankthey decided to keep him there for surgery. The veterinary surgeon opted to put plates into both legs during the one surgery and, yesterday, he had that surgery. Everything went extremely well and he is now in recovery. We hope that he will be able to go into foster care when he leaves the hospital. Of course, there will be a long period of recuperation before he can be a normal dog again, but he now has the possibility of a life ahead of him. The staff at the hospital reports that everyone loves Hank and that he is a real trooper.

Of course, we still need to raise $2000 to cover all Hank’s expenses. So far, we are very grateful to the donors (listed above) and to the following new donors:

Manon Spence

Nicole Cox

Melissa Walton

Sandra and Ron Ruscitti, and

Hannah Lane
